A federal judge on Wednesday preliminarily delayed a ban on noncompete agreements from taking effect for a handful of employers on September 4. Unless the judge makes another ruling to the contrary before that date, the ban will go into effect for the majority of companies in the US. The ban, which prohibits employers from enforcingNoncompete clauses in most existing employment agreements, was approved by the Federal Trade Commission in April.

California's Civil Rights Department announced the proposed settlement on Wednesday. Almost all of the money will go to California workers who took parental leave, family care-taking leave or disability leave. Microsoft employs around 6,700 people in California out of its total workforce of 221,000.
